Maryland statewide Veteran discounts
Mike Certo · Cornerstone First Mortgage · NMLS #260555 ·
Maryland gives its veterans real money beyond the VA loan, but the good stuff is state law that national "military discount" lists never mention, and a few widely-repeated MD figures are flat wrong. Mike works these benefits into closings for Fort Meade, Andrews, Pax River, and Aberdeen buyers every month, so this page sticks to what Maryland statute and SDAT actually say, with the citation next to each number.
Maryland state benefits, with the statute next to each one
Full property-tax exemption for 100% P&T veterans (§7-208)
This is the big one, and it is worth far more than any store discount. If the VA rates you 100% permanent and total from a service-connected disability, Maryland exempts your dwelling and its lot from all real property tax, county and municipal (SDAT, Tax-Property §7-208). There is no income test. There is no annual re-file. And there is no application deadline, so if you were eligible in prior years but never applied, you can request a refund going back up to three years. An un-remarried surviving spouse keeps the exemption on that home, or can move the dollar amount to a new one. File form AT3-45 with your VA rating letter and DD-214. On a $450,000 Baltimore-area home that is roughly $4,500 a year that stops leaving your pocket. Full walkthrough.
The partial credit most 50 to 99 percent vets miss (§9-265)
Rated below 100 percent? You are shut out of §7-208, but a 2023 law lets each Maryland county or town choose to offer a graduated credit: 50% off the county/municipal tax bill at a 75 to 99 percent rating, 25% off at 50 to 74 percent, capped at $100,000 of household income (Tax-Property §9-265). The catch is the word "choose." It only applies where your jurisdiction adopted it, and several DC-metro counties have. Do not assume, call your county's treasury or SDAT office and ask if the disabled-veteran credit is in effect for your rating this tax year.
Military retirement income subtraction
Maryland lets you subtract $12,500 of military retired pay from your state taxable income if you are under 55, and $20,000 once you turn 55 (MDVMF). VA disability compensation is separate and is already fully tax-free, both federally and in Maryland, so a disabled retiree gets both. See the correction above before you trust any bigger number.
Free MVA registration and disabled-veteran plates
A veteran rated 100% service-connected (including 100%-rate individual unemployability) registers one personal vehicle with no MVA registration fee and gets disabled-veteran plates at no charge (MDVMF Motor Vehicles). Gold Star family plates have also been free since October 2024.
Free state-park entry for every Maryland veteran
Here is one almost nobody uses: Maryland's Department of Natural Resources waives day-use entrance fees at all state parks, year-round, for every veteran, resident or not, and it is not limited to a disability rating (MDVMF Recreation). Bring your ID or DD-214.
Tuition help for your kids and spouse (Conroy/Cryor)
The Edward T. Conroy and Jean B. Cryor scholarships cover tuition and mandatory fees, up to $14,086 for 2026-27, for the children and spouses of Maryland service members who died on duty or who carry a service-connected disability of 25 percent or more (MHEC). That 25 percent floor is far more reachable than most families realize, which is exactly why it goes unclaimed.
Maryland Veterans Trust Fund
If a Fort Meade or Aberdeen family hits a rough patch, the state's Veterans Trust Fund makes one-time hardship grants toward rent, mortgage, utilities, or a vehicle for veterans, military families, Gold Star parents and spouses, and Maryland Guard members (MDVMF).
How these stack on top of your VA loan
The reason this page lives on a mortgage site: these benefits compound with the loan. A disabled Fort Meade buyer skips the VA funding fee, puts nothing down, and, once the 100% rating and §7-208 exemption are in place, carries no property-tax line in the escrow at all, which is often a few hundred dollars a month off the payment a lender would otherwise qualify you against. Mike lines these up before you write an offer so the pre-approval reflects the real Maryland number, not the sticker one. See how the escrow math changes →
The national store discounts (skip the long lists)
Home Depot and Lowe's (10% year-round), the usual apparel and phone-carrier deals, and the Veterans Day restaurant meals all apply at Maryland locations the same as everywhere else, so there is no point reprinting a hundred of them here. Verify once through ID.me (the VA's own service), SheerID, or GovX and that credential unlocks most of them at checkout. The Maryland-specific money above is where the real savings sit.
Federal benefits, briefly
Your federal benefits work the same in Maryland as anywhere: VA disability compensation is tax-free and can be grossed up about 25% to help you qualify for a bigger loan; the Post-9/11 GI Bill and its transfer-to-dependents option, VA health care, and DIC for surviving spouses all carry over unchanged. The VA loan you are already using, $0 down, no PMI, funding fee waived at a 10%+ rating, is the anchor. Those rules are national, so this page spends its ink on the Maryland-only pieces above that a generic benefits site will not tell you.
Frequently asked questions
Does Maryland exempt $40,000 of military retirement pay from state tax?
No. That figure comes from the Keep Our Heroes Home Act, which has failed every session it was introduced, most recently HB 761 in 2026. The subtraction Maryland actually allows is $12,500 under age 55 and $20,000 at 55 and older. VA disability compensation is separate and fully tax-free on top of that.
Do 100% disabled veterans pay property tax in Maryland?
No. A veteran rated 100% permanent and total by the VA pays no Maryland real property tax on their home and lot under Tax-Property §7-208, with no income limit and no filing deadline. You can even claim refunds for up to three prior years you were eligible but had not yet applied. An un-remarried surviving spouse keeps the exemption.
I'm rated 70%, do I get any Maryland property-tax break?
Maybe. The full §7-208 exemption is 100%-only, but a separate 2023 credit (§9-265) lets a county give 50% off its tax at a 75 to 99 percent rating or 25% off at 50 to 74 percent, capped at $100,000 income. It is local-option, so it only applies if your county adopted it. Call your county tax office and ask before assuming.
What's the best Maryland veteran benefit almost nobody uses?
Free year-round day-use entry to every Maryland state park, for all veterans regardless of disability rating. Combine it with the Conroy/Cryor tuition scholarship (up to $14,086 for 2026-27, open to families of veterans with a 25%+ rating) and you have two benefits most Maryland veterans never claim.

Common questions
I am rated 70 percent, do I get any Maryland property-tax break?
Maybe. The full Section 7-208 exemption is 100 percent only, but a separate 2023 credit (Section 9-265) lets a county give 50% off its tax at a 75 to 99 percent rating or 25% off at 50 to 74 percent, capped at $100,000 income. It is local-option, so it only applies if your county adopted it. Confirm with your county tax office.
